The Death Deck: Game and Conversation with a Death Doula

Come play with the Death Deck with us during this free event!

National Healthcare Decisions Day (NHDD) is in April, and we’re celebrating all month with various activities. We’ll wrap up the month with a game of The Death Deck* on the last Sunday morning of the month, followed by a non-scary conversation about End-of-Life planning. Anyone above 13 is welcome, but this event specifically aims to engage a younger audience of 20-60 year olds in conversations about death and end of life planning, and bust assumptions that death is only relevant to older audiences.

We’ll have death prep bingo cards and links to one of California’s Advance Healthcare Directive form, as well as some beverages and snacks. It’ll be fun, we promise.

*The Death Deck is a card-based conversation game with a playful tone that encourages casual conversations around death.

Did you join us for this event and you're looking for related info? Or perhaps you missed us and want a taste of what went down? Check out the event page for links, goodies, and eventually photos!

South Bay Death Cafe

Join us in the Program Room at the Sunnyvale Public Library for a discussion of death over tea and cake.

At a Death Cafe, people—often strangers—gather to discuss death. The objective is to increase awareness of death with a view towards helping people make the most of their (finite) lives. The experience will be a group discussion of death with no agenda, objectives or themes. It is a place to talk and explore, rather than a grief support or counseling session.

See our listing on the global Death Cafe site.

Death Cafes help people in ALL phases of life talk about death and dying in a supportive, unstructured way. Death Cafe is a concept that originated in the UK, and are currently held in over 88 countries. Read more about Death Cafes on the global Death Cafe website.

Death Cafes are always:
- Free
- Open to, and respectful of, people of all communities and belief systems.
- In an accessible, respectful and confidential space
- With no intention of leading people to any conclusion, product or course of action

This program is for adults only. Registration is not required.

If you require special accommodation, please contact the library at 408-730-7300 or chat with a librarian at least three days in advance of the program.
